Villa Two

Lotus

When Made Sandi built the second house on the north side of the garden, he changed the first house floor plan, providing a more coherent traffic path. The top and mid level each have a separate entrance, and a large living space with a separate bath. Each bath has a tub based on my design for the first house, but the bathrooms are unique. The lower level is a kitchen only. Made arranged the floor plan to provide more spacious verandas (4 meters or 12 feet by the width of the house) as that seems to be where people gravitate when awake.

Carved stone is used extensively through out the house. The carving is traditional, and the stone may well have been quarried from the rock along the river below. Made has used the local sandstone to excellent effect in many projects, but this is his best effort to date.

Upper level floors are hardwood, as is the rest of the trim. The bamboo framework supporting the roof adds interest to the uppper level, while woven rattan from Borneo is used in wall panels above the sliding doors to provide ventilation and decoration.

Villa 2 (Lotus) is set back further from the gorge than is Villa 1 (Frangipani). It is shaded and peaceful, more intimately set into the garden. Water falls from level to level close by, and the effect is magical.
